Disappointed

We were disappointed by our experience with Lake Wylie Retirement. We heard very good things about them, but things seem to have gone downhill recently. Our loved one was mostly just sitting in a chair on his own. Since he was left he attempted to get up on his own and suffered a fall.

Review for Lake Wylie

Facility itself is excellent, individual rooms were some of the largest, nicest of all we looked at. That was a lot of what sold us on it - great facilities, and food is great, good activities, too. However, we have had all kinds of issues with the staff there. Serious communication issues, cases where right hand doesn't know what left hand is doing, etc. they didn't even know mom was there the first few days. Staff very lazy, has to constantly be stood on to do their jobs and care for mom like supposed to. I have the director's personal cell number, and have had to use it multiple times to get staff to do their job. There have been times mom has fallen in her room, we noticed it first on our web cam, and it took hours of phone calls before they finally attended to her. They are required to check on mom at least every 2 hours, but there were times she was ignored for nearly 12 hours. Took several calls to director to get that corrected. Great place, but overall care provided is severely lacking sometimes , due to some of the lazy staff.

kind not great with communication but would recommend

I had great communication with the lady who got us in and showed us the the apt and when I really needed you get ahold of someone she would make it happen. I just have concerns about the medication not being dispensed correctly causing stress to me. I wish they were more interactive but they are nice and helpful at the front desk.

The apartment is very clean. Common areas appear less clean, probably due to need for updated carpet and paint. They have good care for the most part, but it seems to drop off sharply on the weekends. The food is good, but the process for off- schedule eating needs more flexibility. Dad often misses meals and just has to wait until the next meal (which is easily missed, too). There are a good number of activities, but they seldom interest my Dad. They probably need more attention paid to devising activities for men. We chose this community because of its affordability.

Our Experience

The housekeeping staff does pretty well. Though clothes do get mixed up quite often during the laundry process. There has been a recent sale and management change, so things may get better or worse. Staff turnover is very high. They do let me know about changes in treatment, but after a year, have still not gotten to some critical appointments that need to happen. I would like to see more provision for residents to get snacks and food for themselves or with the help of visitors, but that may be an unrealistic request. I would generally say that they are understaffed and staff can be short with residents. They are unwilling to help residents with some basic needs like getting things that a resident is unable to access on their own due to lack of mobility. They have scheduled activities, but it would be better if residents had things to do on a daily basis other than sit in a common area with a tv. All in all, it's okay.

Adequate Facility

My loved one is a resident at Greenfield Senior Living of Spotsylvania and it's been okay. The nursing supervisor is rather stand-offish and difficult to get information from. Some of the staff are friendly and helpful, others are not. They appear to be very bothered by my loved one asking for anything. On the plus side, it's a small facility and the lead staff know all of the residents by name. The public areas are clean. The bathrooms are clean. The meals are not great, but adequate. I have never used another long-term care facility, so I have no real comparison but this one seems okay. They are in turmoil because they have just changed ownership, so some of these things may improve.

Basic Care - Stay Involved

Most of the staff was very helpful....I felt they were understaffed though. The room was very clean, but I felt that bedding was not changed as often as it should have been. So, I would take care of that myself. Communication was fair. We were notified when there were issues, but they were inconsistent as to which family member they would call. Sometimes calling my sister, who lives out of state, and the time difference there delayed one of us locally having the info needing attention. The meals were good. This is a decent facility for a reasonable price. One very frustrating issue that kept occurring was the loss of clothing items. We grew to accept the situation and were thankful that at least there were clean clothes for my mom, even though they weren't always hers. They lost her wheelchair that was never located. We ended up having a wheelchair for her, but it wasn't what we had arranged for her. The replacement they offered wasn't as nice...heavy, difficult to fold. Frustrating situation.

Nice property but a little more dated than our favorites. Ate a meal there which was fair. Menu had no multiple choices. Did notice a slight institutional smell when first entering. Did not like the Northglenn area as much as [removed] and [removed]. Pricey compared to [removed], a nicer facility.

Needs improvement

Currently things are stable for my parent. We feel the facility is understaffed in memory care, some of the staff may need further training to care for our loved ones, and there appears to be confusion and lack of communication among the staff. The memory care side could be cleaner and kept up, especially the floors and rooms, and there is not nearly enough daily activity for the individuals in memory care. When the weather is nice, it would be good for them to get out and get some fresh air and sun. Much of the staff is friendly, however there are a hand-full that need training on elderly care and professionalism.

Northglenn Heights. 1. Most of the caregivers are really attentive. 2. the q maps are a different story. There is one girl who is cold, seen on her phone downright lazy looking and looks like a [removed]. I had walked by her office and heard the f word coming out of her mouth. 3. The food is terrible. I'm sure the cooks try to deal with what their given but its very bland and not very much meat. You never see a solid piece of meat like a chicken leg or steak.

Nice facility and nice staff. But this facility also does not have gluten free meals specifically for people who have gluten intolerance. I was told that I would have to pick things off of the menu that didn't have gluten. They told me that if I wanted gluten free foods, my family could bring in food for me. Also, the facility temp. was too warm for me having MS. I need 72-73 degrees and it was warmer than that there.

We like it.

The staff are doing the best they can to care for my husband. I have not seen a lot of activities when I visit. I think the residents would benefit from more physical activity. I would not feel comfortable recommending this community as he has not been here long. I would say it is worth taking a look at. The food is ok and they keep the community clean. I feel he is safe at this community.

The Garnet of Casa Grande

I felt like this community wasn't maintained well. There were slapdash jobs in the maintenance of the building, I thought. I could have done a better job on the walls, from what I saw. The tour guide did a fine job, but the staff that was working, I felt like they were there to do a job, and that was it. The food we were given was not good. The quality of the food was below average. I didn't feel like the neighborhood was safe. The home and the neighborhood around it was run down. It's right next to one of the busiest streets in town, and if you have dementia or a walker, it's dangerous.
