Not A Recommendable Community!!

Every time i would go to visit my loved one they were always dirty. I bought my loved one a toothbrush and i saw that they didn't even open it. During the day when managers were around the staff would be trying to take care of the residents, but when the managers weren't there at night they would just sit around and be on their phones and watching television. There is a porch outside and it's always kept dirty.

The facility isn't as updated as others that we visited. They weren't expecting us even though we had an appointment. We viewed a room that was available and it had a terrible odor. We also didn't see much interaction between the residents and staff. Kelly was our tour guide and provided us an information packet. She was very friendly.

Their staff are not well eqipped to de-escalate memory care patients with anger and frustration issues.

Their staff are not well eqipped to de-escalate memory care patients with anger and frustration issues. The activities are general and maybe not as well thought out and accessible for all of the memory care patients. If someone has a loved one who is very low maintenance and is content to sit and doesn't need much then the care is probably fine, the cleanliness, the food, the care, but if there is much beyond that and you need something a little more, I don't think they can handle it. There is also the possibility that if your loved one needs more care, they will hire an agency and not tell you.

Not Happy

I have been very unhappy with my experience at Brookdale. This facility, in my opinion, is not trained to take care of dementia patients. You have to talk to dementia patients differently, you cannot tell them they know better because if they did they wouldn't be where they are, you dont argue with them, they don't know the difference, you have to have patience. I am moving my husband within the next few weeks. The caregivers are expected to do too many different jobs therefore cannot take proper care of the residences. My husband needs completed care, he cannot walk, talk, (he is in a lift that needs two people to put him in it) and last night it took two aids almost an hour to toilet him and get him down to supper, The facility was short staffed last night which is the norm, therefore other residents not getting the help needed. I could go on and on but enough said. Thank You

DO NOT MOVE HERE!

Just disgusting! The owner has zero knowledge in senior living let alone in care. He doesn’t spend the money necessary to have a happy and thriving community. He hired a new management company and they are awful. They’re the most condescending, uncaring, and unapproachable group I’ve ever dealt with. It’s not surprising because the owner is the exact same way. Don’t waste your time even touring this community.

Horrible Care

Our experience was awful. The administration was rude, turnover in staffing was horrible. There was no value to their care. Their whole front office staffing changed with in a month of our family member moving in. You couldn't get a hold of anyone at the facility after 5:00pm. Our family member laid in bed for 2 day not eating or drinking. All of her food trays were still next to her bedside. Was very gravely when we found her. She had an uti that had gone septic. No notification that she wasn't doing well.

Read Lara website first!

My mother was here for 2 years. The first year was good, the second terrible. They have major staffing issues with several license violations due to the issue. My mother was assaulted by a staff member and that is currently under investigation, it was often times filthy, residents are left unattended and neglected due to staffing shortages. The employees lack training and there are no protocols in place for emergencies or incidents that occur. Most of the staff sit in the office on their phones while residents sit in the living room looking at each other. I would never recommend this place to anyone!! Don’t take my word for it, go on the Lara licensing website and see for yourself! I wish I could have removed all the residents when I moved my mom!!

Terrible

Started off good. Have had several changes in management and is now less than stellar. Our loved one had fallen and we were never notified, taken to the hospital and was never told. Was sick with Covid and family was never advised. Need I say more? Zero communication with family members. We have been given numerous phone numbers to the facility that no one EVER answers. So if you want to check on your loved one, good luck. With prior management there were activities for the residents. That seems to have gone by the wayside. Now all the residents just sit in a common area and do nothing all day long, day after day. The one good thing I can say is that they have a good cook and the food seems to be decent. I would highly discourage anyone from sending their loved one to this facility.

Unprofessional Management

My mom has been residing here since [date removed]. Since then a new director took over, many staff members have turned over and our overall experience has declined. There seems to be nothing in place to keep track of when clients get showered, the last time laundry has been done or clothes or sheets have been changed. I bit my tongue for months waiting for improvements. Everytime I visit, I have to clean her room. I had to use a magic eraser to scrub the e sink and toilet. My mom has a toilet raiser due yo a knee surgery and I had to remove it to scrub it in the shower. There were 20+ plastic cups, dust bunnies, shoes, sock etc under her bed. Her medicine cabinet is rusted out. One day I found the ceramic lid to her toilet tank shattered in glass pieces all over her bathroom and three out of four light bulbs dead in her vanity. They replaced the lid with one that doesn’t even fit the tank properly. I also noticed that my mom’s clothes were getting changed and she never had dirty laundry.

Not recommended

My loved one was previously a resident at Brookdale Battle Creek. The overall experience was terrible. The cleanliness and friendliness is not good. The staff and quality of care are not good, either. Animals in the zoo are treated more humane than the residents at the Brookdale Battle Creek facility. I would never recommend this facility to others.

do not recommend Brookdale, look elsewhere, not a good experience

We had a negative experience with Brookdale. After 6 months of being there they found bedbugs in her room. They tried to blame it on my mother in law. The food was not good. Cold oatmeal in the morning. Plus much more. When we moved her out my daughter the POA emailed the director of the faculty multiple times telling them to send her a final bill. The months later they threatened to place late fees on the final bill. My daughter had proof of the emails. And she also verbally had asked for the final bill. It's been paid and we haven't heard anything from them since. We have moved her to another facility and that has been wonderful.

My husband went to Brookfield when I coul no longer handle him at home. He had Alzheimers. The Covid pandemic had just started and I was not Allowed to see him. The first time I could, it was behind a glass door. I saw a very clear black and blue hand print on his upper arm. When I told staff I was told [name removed] did not want to take a shower and they would look into it. I never heard any more. Staff continued to try to give him a shower until one day he lashed out and bit a caregiver. He was then sent to the psych ward by ambulance for 2 weeks for observation. When returned to Brookfield, [name removed] went into someone’s room and took a banana. He was sent back to psych ward and we were told he could no longer come back to Brookdale. We found him another place and never had any trouble there. I was current with my monthly payments and was all paid up by the 1st of the month. Several weeks later. I was told I needed to pay $[removed]for the months activity fee. This was something new they just started. I said activity fee was never in my contract and Bill was long gone from Brookdale. After going around and around I finally called Ombudsman and they handled the case I could NEVER recommend Brookdale to anyone. The administrator is in my opinion, very ridged and hard to deal with. The staff is not trained well My husband has been dead now for 1 year. Doing this review has brought up memories of these and many more things that happened. It has been upsetting for me to remember it I hope it will be helpful to you and others seeking a good place Brookdale is NOT one of them

We toured with Brookdale Delta and there were many things that we did not like that we saw. The rooms were small with very little accommodations to have visitors or family. We also only saw one staff member while we were walking around. This facility is a lot more expensive and they have a large one-time community fee to pay up front.

BEWARE, a hellish nightmare...

My mother was here for four years. The facility changed owners after two years and services deteriorated significantly under the new owner. Residents are routinely medicated with Risperadol, an anti-psychotic medication that acts as a strong sedative so most residents were hanging out of wheelchairs. Apparently, it is easier to take of people who are almost unconscious--but such strong medications do result in MANY residents falling and hurting themselves. Moreover, this medication is not approved for dementia patients. When we found out that my mother was being given this medication, we stopped it immediately. Care of residents is deplorable. My mother would not be taken to the toilet for many hours on end, so she would end up sitting in wet or soiled adult diaper. So inhumane! I cannot blame the nurses aids b/c they were understaffed and were paid minimum wage. I could provide so many more examples but suffice it to say that THE BLAME FOR THIS DEPLORABLE CARE LIES ENTIRELY WITH THE OWNER .

Bad fit

This was the wrong place for my mother. First, they said stay away for 7-10 days. Said they would adjust her Medicine, never happened. Said they would use foam boots at night for sore on her heel, never happened. After a week, she had no clean clothes. Said she needed a hospital bed after one week, never happened. But after 10-11 days, she fell/rolled out of bed and broke her hip. And as they waited for the ambulance at 4:00AM, they supposedly got her dressed so she would look good with broken bones in the hospital. On the day before she fell out of bed, she was sitting with other patients in the living room in pants and a camisole, cold. No clean clothes. In fact, they only found her clothes today (Friday), 6 days without clothes. My mom didn't need them anyway, since she was in the hospital, and today went into hospice. So no, it didn't work out very well.

Do not put your loved one in here

My dad fell and hurt himself. They took him to the ER and they called to tell me he had fallen. The facility did not even call me to tell me what had happened. I confronted the manager and she said she called my son and I looked at his phone and they did not call. Anytime I went here they never wore masks. My dad was not happy here and so I moved him into a new facility. I asked them to pack his belongings so I could pick it up and she said she would call when it was ready. By Thursday I had no call so we drove by and all of his stuff was in boxes covered in snow in the front yard. Half of the clothes were not even his and no valuables were given back. I would never recommend to anyone.
