Avalon Memory Care

There are not enough caretakers for the # of residents for #1! The ones there have to cook, clean, give care! We all pay enough to have a dedicated cook that cleans also. Hire a cook/maid for goodness sakes! The care takers there are overworked! Your mngt let 2 (both) overnight caretakers go on vacation for one month with no logical plan. Your owners /mgnt seem more worried about lining your own pockets then having a decent team! [name removed]is the hardest workers and she is 65! [name removed] is loud and does nothing but cooks decent but [name removed] has no help when its just those two.

They take great care of the residents. So long as the resident is able they take them out to the living area to watch or sleep to the tv and to the dining room for meals. They spoon feed them if need be and talk to them. I also can't say enough good things about Hospice which was recommended to me when I first interviewed at Avalon.

They had a wonderful care giver that used to mom the floor all the time. My boys won't touch anything if it touches the floor now. They can't wait to use hand sanitizer once we leave. They have had a HUGE staff turnover. Only 1 person there that was there when mom moved in. My mom seems happy, but can't tell me what happens. She is clean for the most part. I have to ask for them to wash her hands. They are usually dirty when we arrive. It is the same crap. You can predict what they will be having for lunch. Residents aren't excited about most of the meals. I've never seen them do any activities. They have painted Mom's nails once. Mom doesn't sit still, so that could be the issue. I think they watch tv 90% of the time. Cost is cheaper, so you get what you pay for. They have had quite a few resident move out in the last few months. We are currently looking at a new place for my mom.

The management lies, gaslights and a few other things. After a very, very, needlessly, completely unavoidable rocky start, my family member was not unhappy there. And, after all said and done, she was where she needed to be.

The selling point was the ratio of resident to staff. Communication wasn't as much as I would have liked. The facility went through a significant staff turnover, and during that time, the cleanliness and laundry suffered. That situation eventually improved. [name removed] passed in March, so I'm no longer involved with Avalon.

Strong points are residents spend a lot of time out of their room with others. Negatives are staff seems to turnover & not sure who is in charge if there are issues you need to speak to someone about.

I would recommend them they have done a good job it's just expensive.

Last couple times I was there my mom was dirty. I could tell she had an accident.

The staff is friendly. Housekeeping-they keep everything clean. Communication-pitiful, they do not keep any calendar for activities so there is no way of knowing if anything is going on, no social media presence to keep family informed, no email or newsletter with updates or upcoming information. The move in was very easy and they were very accommodating. The meals-best to be expected for a place like this, however, no menu provided and no choices given for each meal. Suggestions for improvement-THEY NEED AN ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR!!!! This is one of my biggest complaints. Mom has been here 4 months and still there are not daily activities for the residents. Sure, they bring in a singer once a month, they have special holiday meals, they have added a weekly visit from a comfort dog, but day in and day out...the activity of choice for the employees is to have the residents sit in the recliners and watch tv. (While I might add, the employees play on their phones!). I have not once walked in to see any other activities going on. Also, the program portrayed to us at the initial consultation does not really exist. They do not take the residents to the bathroom every 2 hours and there is no hydration program in place! If they hydrated, they would have to take them to the bathroom! As far as referrals, the sad thing is that I think all places are the same. The one plus is that the staff are friendly and the facility itself is aesthetically pleasing and clean. I would urge any I refer to come visit for an extended time. I will not move mom, but it has been disappointing that what was sold to us is not what goes on here.

The people that work there were wonderful. Super helpful and friendly. There wasn't really anything for the residents to do except watch tv. I'm understand that the workers were doing absolutely everything to keep the place going so there wasn't really time for activities My mom is no longer there because there just wasn't anyone she could talk to. The other ladies that could still communicate had their own delusions and would tell my mom stuff and get her scared. It just wasn't a good situation for her. Avalon was good and I don't have anything bad to say about it. It just wasn't a good fit for my mom's needs

The room was nice, the staff was friendly. The Nurse/ Director was not good, the communication was bad, I had to call often to get info.. They served dinner many nights with no vegetables and I reported it and the response was nobody really eats the vegetables. Improve on communication, professionalism of CNAs, some wore biker shorts and SpongeBob tshirts. They may want more of a Nursing presence. The Nurse left most days by 3:30p so there was a lot of time with no Nurse supervision. They lost his clothes, I asked about them, they kept saying they were in the wash and I had to hunt down his clothes, they were in other residents rooms. They would take my Dad to meals in his pajamas and no shoes, a dignity issue, he would have never done that himself. My Dad got a skin tear, they put a bandaid on it with out cleaning it. We payed $[removed] monthly and his dessert was a little Debbie's pound cake. I appreciated the CNAs, they were kind to my Dad.

What the Avalon Memory Care community could improve on is to have more activities that are more engaging for the residents. Also, they could provide better tasting food. The staff could also work on improving their response times.

Make sure you understand everything from the community before putting your loved one in this community, the staff is unskilled for the memory care residents.

We picked this community because thought the ratio of caregivers to resiedents was good. A lot of things needs to improve. I am dissapointed and sad with the community.

I wasn’t that impressed with Avalon. The people all looked like they were zonked out. I didn't see anybody active there.

Avalon Memory Care is more of an advanced nursing home on a smaller scale. A lot of their patients are farther progressed in the care that they need. At other memory care places we toured, there was more of a variety in the functioning level of their patients. At Avalon, a lot of patients are non-ambulatory and need a lot of 1:1 care, so it's less of a traditional memory care facility but instead more of a higher level nursing facility. If it wasn't for one staff member in particular, I think our experience would have been a lot less enjoyable. She was amazing - she texted us and FaceTimed us every day to talk to my dad. She ended up going on maternity leave, and within the next week my dad declined rapidly. They have some really good staff there, but they also have some staff who do not offer the services and value for the money. I think every place has their own staffing challenges, but because of how small this particular facility is, I don't think those challenges are managed very well. Also from a safety perspective with elopement concerns, how the facility was run during daytime business hours was very different than how it was run during evenings and weekends. We visited often at all different times and witnessed stark differences in shifts, with business hours running smoothly but deficits occurring on evenings and weekends. I definitely think the facility has potential if there were improvements in management.

They do not have an intake coordinator on property. They were helpful in the beginning, but I had to tell them to clean the room from the previous resident. It was cleaned one time and never again. We had a lot of issues. They were not good with communication. I think it was more of a group home. I had to remind them to feed the residents vegetables. When I would visit they would be dressed in strange clothing or clothing that was not his, they lost a lot of his clothing. It is a small and peaceful facility and the workers were very kind, but my experience was not so great with them.

The bedroom would've been a shared and the communal spaces were nice.

This was the only place we toured that we didn't really care for, mostly because the person who was supposed to tour with us didn’t show up for whatever reason. So we had to rely on somebody who was taken by surprise. One of the caregivers who was taking care of the patients that day took us around and did the best that she could. I just think some of our questions were outside of her paygrade. But it seemed like a good facility. We just weren't able to learn enough about it.
